CHRONIC ILLNESS

As a health psychologist, I help people with emotional and psychological challenges that arise in response to physical health problems.  These physical health problems include:

  • Chronic Pain
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • IBS
  • MS
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer

While all of these conditions come with their unique set of circumstances, there are some universal themes that invariably arise when faced with a change in your physical health status.  I provide individual psychological treatment to improve your ability to

  •  optimize coping with chronic illness and disease by addressing psychological barriers to recovery (e.g., depression, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress symptoms)
  • manage pain and resume life roles and activities following injury or physical illness (including return to work)
  • adjust effectively to loss and change associated with significant health challenges (e.g., loss of function, change in life roles)
  • cope with grief following loss of a loved one, or in anticipation of a significant loss (including dealing with one’s own mortality)
  • cope with challenges in significant relationships
  • restore a positive sense of self-esteem in spite of physical challenges and limitations
  • make healthy lifestyle changes to optimize management of physical conditions
  • obtain restorative sleep
